Passion, Motivation and Wisdom : Early Childhood Professionals

" I always wanted to be a teacher, because I had just a built in passion that it was important to make a real contribution in the world and to  fix all the injustices that existed in the world." - Lousise Derman-Sparks Professor Emeritus, Pacific Oak College, CA

"We in the early childhood field have the opportunity to shape a child's life for the better." - Sandy Escobido-Deputy Field Director Los Angles Preschool Advocacy Initiative, California Community Foundation
QUOTES THAT INSPIRE:

"As you consider whether to move a child into formal academic training, remember that we want our children to do more than just learn how to read and write; we want them to learn in such a way that they become lifelong readers and writers. If we push our children to start learning these skills too far ahead of their own spontaneous interest and their capacity, we may sacrifice the long-range goal of having them enjoy such pursuits."  Lillian G. Katz - Early Childhood Educator and Co-Founder of Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children.

"Until justice is blind to color, until education is unaware of race, until opportunity is unconcerned with the color of men's skins, emancipation will be a proclamation but not a fact." Former President Lyndon B. Johnson and founder of the Head Start Program.

MY PERSONAL CHILDHOOD WEB

Five individuals who nurtured and cared for me as a child consist of : My mother, father, Aunt Louise , Aunt Clasrissa and my sister Carmen.

My mother who has almost been gone from my life physically for five years is the single most influential person in my life. My mother cared and nurtured me like I was the only person on earth. She was more than just my mama she was my friend , confidant and everything she ever done or said to me still resides in me as I raise my own family.

My father , or daddy as I like to call him has been out of my life for almost four years now and still remember how I was always daddy's little girl. Even after I got married he was still my protector, always looking out for his baby girl.

My Aunt Louise, or Lele as I called her was my grandmother's twin sister, (my grandmother died before I met her) and my surrogate grandmother. Lele taught me so much, how to cook, clean. We would often watch her "stories" (soap operas) together. I'm still influenced by her cooking and cleaning styles.

My Aunt Clarissa was like a second mom to me. I use to watch her get ready for her dates before she got married and marvel at her style. She was always very nurturing and loving toward me.

My sister Carmen , who is 7 years older than me, has always been protective and loving toward me. Although at times as most siblings have, we argued but never anything lasting. As youngster she would do my hair , take me shopping and "show" me off to her friends.

A CHILD'S SMILE.........

A child's happiness, their smile fuels me most in the early childhood education field. The  moment a child gets something they were having difficulty in and their eyes light up and you know you were apart of that revelation is totally awesome!

One of my favorite books, is actually a book series, The Berenstain Bears. I've always enjoyed reading to my children and students about the family dynamics of the Berenstain's. The stories showcased Mama, Papa , Brother and Sister and later Honey Bear. The love and togetherness of solving every day  situations in ways that's easy for small children to understand and interesting enough for adults.

The Berenstain Bears , celebrated 50 years of learning and fun for children. Their website, www.berenstainbears.com, offers something for everyone  including parents, grandparents and teachers.

FAVORITE QUOTE

One of my favorite quotes comes from the Bible:

TRAIN UP A CHILD IN THE WAY HE SHOULD GO: AND WHEN HE IS OLD, HE WILL NOT DEPART FROM IT. PROVERBS 22:6 KJV

This scripture speaks to me , because I feel that children should be given a solid start , mentally, physically, socially, spiritually and academically. If children have a solid foundation they can dream big and conquer the world and beyond.
